About
Can’t Stop the Serenity is a global sci-fi charity event, organized entirely by volunteers, that raises money to support the work of Equality Now and other charities.
Serenity is the feature film sequel to Joss Whedon’s space western TV series Firefly. Firefly fans, collectively known as Browncoats, began hosting charity screenings of Serenity in 2006, with proceeds going to benefit one of Whedon’s favourite charities, Equality Now. Over the past five years, Can’t Stop the Serenity has grown to global proportions, with over half a million dollars raised for Equality Now and other charities by Browncoats in more than 50 cities all over the world. Each year sees new fans and more funds raised for worthy causes.
Equality Now (www.equalitynow.org) was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Through its Women’s Action Network of national human rights groups and individual activists, Equality Now:
- Documents violence and discrimination against women
- Takes action to protest human rights violations
- Supports international action to stop human rights abuses against women
The majority of all funds raised through CSTS events hosted worldwide are donated to Equality Now. Each city, however, has the option of donating 25% of their profits to a locally based charity. Here in Halifax, we have chosen to support the work of the Avalon Centre (www.avaloncentre.ca). Avalon provides a 24-hour help line for victims of sexual assault, as well as individual counseling, support and therapy groups, and court support.
2011 is the sixth year of Can’t Stop the Serenity. With your help, we’re getting the message out, doing good work, making a difference – and having fun!
